There are two types of research:

• Fundamental research: Explore mechanism design and prove the fundamental properties and limitations of new mechanisms, or define basic concepts and clarify their relevance.
• Applied research/R&D: Focus on practical problem solving. Develop new mechanisms, analyze and improve existing mechanisms, design implementations, and verify robustness through simulations.

We focus on applied research and cooperate with academic researchers on fundamental research. It is important for R&D to set problems based on the challenges Ethereum faces and provide timely solutions.

Ethereum's open research environment and permissionless nature allow us to create a system that allows people from various backgrounds, including fundamental researchers, applied researchers, developers, and communities, to collaborate at an unprecedented level. This approach allows us to approach problem solving from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.

• Analysis and proposal to optimize the incentive structure for validators, including issue, burn, etc., to ensure long-term economic security
• Analysis and proposal for an overview of PoS (Proof of Stake) attacks and the costs of censorship
• Proposal and implementation of single slot finality
• Proposal and implementation of a mechanism for efficient allocation of block space
• Analysis of the market structure induced by bargaining power, collusion, and MEV among players in the block construction process
• Analysis and proposal of DEX / CEX, DEX / DEX arbitrage, and sandwich attacks
• Exploration and implementation of methods for seamless liquidity aggregation and settlement

Such topics can be layered into protocols and applications. Because the MEV problem affects not only consensus but also applications, we propose a complementary approach to framing the problem from both perspectives.
